Final Fantasy VIII Limit Breaks
Limit Breaks
Each playable character in Final fantasy VIII can perform Limit Breaks. When their HP is critical (yellow), it is easier to
get a Limit Break. When Squall, for instance, is critical, a arrow may appear beside the attack command. Simply press right
on the D-Pad, to execute the Limit Break.
After the Limit Break is complete, there is a chance for a Final Attack. These are achieved by doing certain things for a
character. An example would be for Zell's final attacks, you need to read the Combat King magazines. In this section, you
will learn the final attacks of each character, and how to get them. Try to get everyone's Limit Breaks. They are some of
the best attacks in the game.
|
Squall's Limit Break: Renzokuken |
When Squall begins his Limit Break, a bar appears with a line running right to left. When
it enters the small box on the left, hit the R1 trigger for higher damage. If you miss the chain will continue, but the damage
will be significantly less. After the chain is complete, there is a small chance a final attack will occur. The available
final attack is determined by what weapon Squall is carrying. Bear in mind that though you might have the Lionheart Sword,
the final attack might be one of the weaker ones. The upgrade on the weapon only UNLOCKS the final attack. |

Rinoa's Limit Break: Angelo Rush/Angel Wings |
When Rinoa is in dire need, her dog Angelo will come running. He can even appear in battle,
without being called upon. Rinoa can teach Angelo various tricks, by reading Pet Pals magazines.
Once a magazine is read, a new trick is placed in Rinoa's status screen. Just select the trick you want to learn, and continue
your journey. When it is complete, you will get a sound indicating the trick is learned. You can then select another trick
for Angelo to learn. |

Angel Wing |
When Rinoa summons Angel Wing, she is berserked for the rest of the battle. Even if she is KO'ed, she will be revived berserked. Instead of using physical attacks, Rinoa will cast magic. Her speed and
magic power are given a hefty boost, and the spells are chosen at random. The great thing, is the spells Rinoa uses will not be taken from your inventory. |

Zell's Limit Break:
Duel |
When Zell's limit is activated, a small window will appear at the bottom of the screen. This
window shows all the available moves you can perform. To the right of the window, is the timer for your combo. If you do not
enter a combo in the set time, the attack will end. When you correctly enter a combo, the window will disappear, then reappear
with a new set of combos. Sometimes you might notice a blank spot in the window.
When these appear, you can perform Punch Rush, instead of another move. Doing the combo's might seem difficult at first, but
once you know them it is a breeze. |
Once I got a hold of the Strategy Guide for Final Fantasy VIII, I discovered there is no randomness to the combo's. In the
tables below is the string of combos needed to perform a final attack.
I have tested each string to make sure they work. *NOTE* The string attacks
were redone, using Baradygames© Official Strategy Guide as a reference.

Quistis's Limit Break: Blue Magic |
In Final Fantasy VIII, there is a slightly different way for you to get Blue Magic. In the previous titles, you needed to
be hit with the spell, in order to learn it. Now you will need certain items to learn the spells. You can get the items a
number of different ways. They are dropped/stolen from enemies, refined from cards, or in the case of Dark Matter, a refine
ability is needed. Below is a list of the spells, and the items you need to learn the magic. |

Selphie's Limit Break:
Slot |
When you select Selphie's Slot, a menu of spells will appear at the bottom of the screen.
In the menu you will find regular spells, and spells with numbers by them. The numbers indicate the amount of times the spell
will be cast.
There is also an option to "Do Over", which replaces the current spell with a new one. If you are looking for one of Selphie's
Limit spells, this is the option to choose. Do not worry about hitting enemies with restorative magic, or allies with offensive
magic. Even if Selphie becomes confused, this will not happen.
The hardest spell to get is "The End". It requires Selphie to be in the highest levels, and the most critical HP. It is by
far the best attack in the game. I was able to use it one time against Omega, and it even killed him. |
Full-Cure |
Completely restores party's HP |
Wall |
Casts Protect and Shell on the entire party |
Rapture |
Wings attach to the enemy, and they are flown out of battle. (Doesn't work on bosses) |
The End |
The enemy is relocated to a field of flowers, and laid to rest. (Works on all enemy and bosses,
but for undead.) |

Irvine's Limit Break:
Shot |
When you select Irvine's Limit, you are given the option of what ammo to use. Take into consideration
what might be needed.
Are you facing one or more enemies, and is there an elemental weakness?
This should help in choosing what to use. Once that is done, two windows will appear. The one on the right tells you the time
left on the limit, and your ammo. The one on the left shows the enemies being targeted.
You will need to move your cursor up and down to target different enemies.
Most of your ammo can be bought, stolen, or refined.
Below is a list of Irvine's shots, and the ammo needed to use them.
You can also reserve shots by watching the enemies targeted. If you are doing no damage, they are dead. Press the triangle
button to end the Limit Break. |
Limit Break |
Ammo Needed |
Description |
Normal Shot |
Normal Ammo |
This shot causes normal amount of damage, with a medium load time. |
Scatter Shot |
Shotgun Ammo |
This is the same as Normal Shot, but with this one you can hit all the enemies at once. |
Dark Shot |
Dark Ammo |
This is just like Normal Shot, but you can also cause several different status effects too. |
Flame Shot |
Fire Ammo |
This fire-elemental shot does damage to all enemies at once. It is perfect for enemies that
are weak to fire. But ones that absorb fire, will absorb the shot as well. |
Canister Shot |
Demolition Ammo |
This is a slow shot, with some major damage behind it. You can cycle through the enemies,
but with the load time, it is difficult. |
Quick Shot |
Fast Ammo |
This one is like a machine gun in terms of speed. Though it is not a strong shot, you can
unload a lot in short order. |
Armor Shot |
AP Ammo |
Armor shot is stronger and faster than Canister Shot. |
Hyper Shot |
Pulse Ammo |
Maximum damage to one enemy, with a quick load time. |
|
Seifer's Limit Break: Fire Cross |
Seifer blasts his opponent with a major fire attack. When it strikes his foe, he follows with
a blast from his Gunblade. |
|
Edea's Limit Break:
Ice Strike |
Calling on her powerful sorceress magic, Edea creates a giant icicle. She then hurls it into
her opponents for heavy damage. (This is not an elemental attack, despite being ice in nature.) |
|
Laguna's Limit Break:
Desperado |
Laguna tosses a live grenade into a group of enemies. He then grabs a rope, and unloads a barrage
of bullets into the pack. The grenade then blows everything sky high, for incredible damage. |
|
Kiros's Limit Break:
Blood Pain |
Kiros strikes hard and fast with his Katal knives. He rushes about the screen tearing up his
foe, causing incredible damage to them. |
|
Ward's Limit Break: Heavy Anchor |
Ward lunges his heavy anchor high in the air. He then jumps on top of it, and rides it back
to the ground.
The resulting shock wave devastates all enemies on the screen. |
