Super Mario World was the first title to find its way to the Super Nintendo. Like the original Mario Brothers and the NES, Super Mario World was packaged with the SNES, and became the largest selling title on the system with 20 million sold. It was given a large amount of great reviews when released in 1991. With Nintendo struggling to get into the 16 bit era, there was a release of a now famous other side scrolling game called Sonic the Hedgehog that threatened to take Mario's popularity as well as the Nintendo systems. Once Mario World was released, the popularity of Mario came back fast.
As was the case with the original Mario Brothers, Super Mario World redefined the "Side Scrolling" genre of platform games for the SNES. everything was a giant leap ahead of Super Mario Brothers III released only a year before. There were a couple of similarities between the two gmes. One of them was the way you went across a world map, and accessed the many levels from it. But this was done far more elaborately in Mario World. The graphics for the main map were beautifully done, with many animated sprites on it. The graphics found in the game were leaned more towards the 3-D than in previous titles. There was a great deal of detail in the enemy sprites, character sprites, and backgrounds. Also Mario World utilized the multiple background abilities of the SNES to create more realistic worlds. This was something not widely used in other titles, and was something to behold in the levels where you see enemies and Mario traverse behind objects, and trees. This also allowed for such effects as the water rippling in the world map, or stars to twinkle.
The game also had a huge amount of firsts for the series. The Biggest was the introduction of Yoshi. This little dinosaur type character has become one of the most loved characters in the Mario series. In Mario World, there are 4 different Yoshi characters, capable of doing their own unique abilities. There was also the first in awarding the player for getting 100% of the game done. This has become a very popular thing in all types of games that have come after. Even as recently as Final Fantasy X-2, where you are given different endings, depending on how much of the actual story/game you complete.
The music was also given a great boost from the original three titles. With the introduction of stereo sound on the SNES, the sound quality of the score was fantastic. Composer Koji Kondo created all of the music used in Super Mario World with a single electronic keyboard. This is quite an accomplishment considering the amount of different scores for each level, as well as each different area on the main maps. If you wait for about two minutes in the special zone map, the music will change to an updated steel drum version of the original Mario Brothers theme. This is actually quite a good rendition of the theme, and is worth the wait to hear once.
Overall, this is a fantastic title for the SNES. It is said by many fans to be the best Mario game (pre-3-D) made. It was certainly the best of the best on the SNES, and has become something of a classic along with the first three titles. All of the new inventions and game play found in Super Mario World has been utilized in many many other titles, as well as game genres, ever since. It has had a great impact on the gaming world, the same as the first Mario Brothers did in 1985. This is a title that has the best to offer for Mario fans everywhere.
