Toads Home
There are little mushroom huts scattered throughout the game. If you enter one of these quaint home, you will find a mushroom citizen. He will grant you the ability to take one item from the choice of three chests. These items can range anywhere from a Starman, Leaf, Fire Flower, and so on. There are a few times where you might get one of the three different suits. I have yet to ever see a P-Wing, Cloud, Music Box, Hammer, or Anchor come out of a chest though.
Memory Game
When you collect a certain amount of points, a spade will show on a location Mario has already passed. In this little room, you are given a type of matching game. You are given a table with cards that are flipped over. You have two chances to get matching cards. If you get it right, you can continue, until you lose two times. In this bit of cards, there are two mushrooms, two fire flowers, two starmen, a 1-Up, and a 10 and 20 coin. Anything you collect you will keep. It is a great way to get some needed items for your inventory, extra money, or lives. Below are the decks that you can get. (Each time you get a new deck, it is randomly chosen.) See if you can clear the entire board in one shot.
Match Game
In the little stationary spade sections of the world, you can play a game of matching the images. This will give you extra lives, depending on the image you match. In the game, the screen is divided into three separate sections, which cross the screen either to the left, or the right. You will have to time it so each image that stops is matched to the others. The first to be stopped is the top set of images, followed by the middle, and finally the bottom image. Here you can see how the screen looks. This takes a lot of practice and timing to accomplish. It is pretty easy to get a Mushroom, medium difficulty for the Flower, and very hard to get the Star. There are certain points that you have to hit the button, to make them stop on the image you want. As soon as I can master this, I will let you all know :D
Once you complete an image, you will then be rewarded with a certain amount of 1-Ups, depending on the image you matched, as seen below.
= 2-Up = 3-Up = 5-Up
Secret Coin Ship
There is a very rare, very well hidden airship in Mario Brothers 3. It is a coin ship, that takes a lot of things happening to show up. It is a very difficult thing to accomplish, and before the advent of the PC with the save ANYTIME function, I had only seen this one time. There are several things you need to do in order to get them to appear. Here is what you will need: You need to be in World 1, World 3, World 5 or World 6. There must be at least one Hammer
Brother on the map. If you defeat the Hammer Brothers walking on the map, it cannot happen. You have to get your coin total to be a multiple of 11. This can be either 11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88 or 99. You need to have the 10's digit
in your score to be the same number as the 10's digit in your coin total. Basically, if you have 11 coins, your score will have to be 0082210. And the last thing is you have to
finish a level with the timer on an even number. The Hammer Brother on the
map will then transform into the coin ship. This coin ship is loaded with...coins of course! You should be able to get at least two 1-Ups on the ship with the amount of coins. There is also a hidden 1-Up Mushroom, right before the pipe at the end of the ship. Inside what would be the battle room on other ships is a Starman. If you did this with Two Hammer Brothers wandering the map, there will be two ships that appear. As stated before, meeting the requirements of this is difficult as all get. But give it a shot, the rewards are awesome. Below is a map of the coin ship, so you can see the rewards for yourself.
Whistle Locations
There are three hidden whistles in Super Mario Brothers 3. These whistles, when used, will grant you access to the games hidden Warp World. With the two of the whistles found in the first world, you can easily access the final level, before you even take on the first boss. Below, is the location of each whistle found in the game.
The first location is at the end of World 1-3. Here, just before you reach the end, you will find a solid white block with a red Koopa on it. Before venturing up there, wipe out the goombas on the ground, and rid yourself of the flying one dropping Micro-Goombas as well. Now get on the white block, and duck down for 5 seconds. You will then drop behind the scenery, and head to the end of the level. Instead of entering the black area, you will run behind it. This will take you to a Mushroom home, where one of the citizens has a whistle in a box.
The second whistle is actually located inside the fortress of the first world. When you reach the end area that has a leaf box and a Dry Bone enemy, get your leaf. Now kill the Dry Bone, and use the floor to run to the right, and fly. Now when you start to fly, hug the right ceiling, until you begin going to the right. (You will be off screen) Run to the end, and press up to go into the hidden door. Inside you will see a small chest with your second whistle inside. At this point, you can use both whistles to get to the last level. Use the first whistle to take you to the Warp World. Now before entering any levels, use the second whistle, and it will drop you to the last section to enter Level 8.
The final whistle is found in World 2, but requires a bit of work to get. Your first objective is to battle the Hammer Brothers wandering the map. One of them is carrying the Hammer Item. With this item, you can destroy rocks that are blocking your path. Once you ahve the hammer, go to the top right corner of the map, as shown in the picture. Here, use the Hammer to break the rock, revealing a hidden path. Go down this path and defeat the Hammer Brother here, and you will be rewarded with the third and final whistle of the game. Now there is nowhere in Mario Brothers 3 you cannot go to!
