Final Fantasy IX Misc. Quests
Coffee anyone?
On your first visit to the town of Dali, you should stop
by the lookout tower. Here you will find Mr. Morrid. If you talk to him, you will find he is a major coffee lover. Ask
him about the Mini Prima Vista, and he will offer it to you, as long as you are willing to bring him back three types of coffee.
He will ask for Burman, Kirman, and Moccha blends.
The Moccha Coffee can be obtained by visiting the South Gate entrance, after you leave Lindblum for the first time. There
is actually a hint in the ATE, where Bakku and Cinna stop by here.
The Kirman Coffee cannot be obtained, until you reach Madain Sari on Disk 2. It is in front of the closest table on Eiko's
porch, at the end.
The final coffee blend can be tricky. And you only get one chance to go after this one. Durring the Card Turnament in Treno,
you will need to leave town, and head for Dali. You can take someone with you, but by the time you get to this point, Zidane
should be able to handle the battles alone. Once you are at Dali, return to the windmill, and enter the Mayor's house.
You will be given a list, to which you choose what you would like to do. Here is what you will need to do, to not wake the
Mayor's brother:
Search the desk, and get the Mini Brahne
Search the desk two more times.
After the brother gives a ZZZ, check the heater
Take the Mayor's Key, and open the locked door in the windmill
In the Chocobo pen to the far right is a chest. Open it, and get 30,000 Gil. Inspect the chest again, and you will get the
Burman Coffee.
Take these coffee's to Morrid, and he will mail you the Mini Prima-Vista. Return to the Tantalus hideout, and it will be there. This
is the only way to get all the Mini figurines. If you miss out on the one time to get the Burman coffee, you will not be able
to get it again. |
Auction House
On your first trip to Treno, you might have wandered into the Auction House. This is the first time Dagger actually sees Kuja.
You cannot do anything at the time, but when you return, yo0u can begin to bid on items sold there. There is a great many
things to buy here, but there are several unique things you will want to get a hold of.
The mechanics of bidding are very simple. Walk up to the Auctioneer, and when you wish to bid, hit the command button. You
will then be given a screen where you can place the amount you wish to bid. If you get outbided, simply place another bid
in. There is a bit of a trick to getting each item you want. Just wait, until the item is about to be sold, and place your
bid higher than the last, and you should get it right off the bat. Here is the full list of items that are being sold, their
highest price, and when they are available.

Several of the unique items can be sold to the nobles of Treno by Stellazio's home. This is
actually needed in order to get the Magical Fingertip item to appear. When you buy either Doga's Artifact, Une's Mirror, Griffin's Heart, or Rat Tail, they can be sold to the nobles. When you first offer the item to them, they will give you an offer. You can take it, or refuse. If you refuse, all but one will give you a second, higher price. Sell it, and go get the item again.
It should be noted that after you initially sell the item, they will no longer buy additional ones. If you buy it from the auction again, it will be yours to keep. In regards to the Magical Fingertip...A lot of people have asked why it is not showing up in the auction, though they are on Disk 4. Well, there is a bit more to it than just being on Disk 4. You also need to have sold each of the items to the nobles that you can. |
Once you do this, then the Magical Fingertip will show up in the auction.
Below is a list of the nobles who will buy the items from the Auction House, and what their two offers are.

The Rat Tail cannot be sold, until you sell the Griffin's Heart first. Guess the nobles are picky about what they do and don't get huh?
Monster fighting
In Treno's weapon shop, you will notice a cage under the floor, with a monster inside of it. If you ask the shop keeper about it, he will tell you the owners have captured the monster, and asks if you want to fight it. If you accept, you will face a monster with one character of your choice. The rewards are good, and the monster changes with each Disk of the game. Give it a shot, and see if you can win. Here is the monsters and the prizes you will win.
Disk 2: Griffin-Tonberry Card
Disk 3: Catoblepas-15,000 Gil

Dagger's True name
There is a very, very large secret in Final fantasy IX. It is the chance to reveal Dagger and her mother's true names. On
Disk 4, head to Madain Sari. Create a party with Dagger in it, and head to Eiko's room, and Lani should be standing there.
But when you approach her, Lani will run away.
After doing so, exist and select a party of anyone but Dagger ot Amarant. Talk to Lani twice. When you completely go through
her dialogue, she will mention that she saw some writing on the wall in the small room. Make a trek out to the Eidolon Wall.
When you enter this time, the scene will be different than before. From the entrance, go to the right, until you pass the
bubble at the entrance again. You should be able to hear a chime of some type. After you do, walk left back to the entrance
once again, just past the "!" icon, and the chme. Repeat this all again nine times. Make sure that each time you pass the
"!" icon, you hear the sound at the wall. On the last time around the characters HP/MP will be restored.
Finally, you must read all the Eidolon paintings. These are quite interesting entries about the history of the village, and
summoning. When you are finished, find Ifrit's drawing and Dagger and her mother's true names will be revealed. If you
wish to see her name without going through the ordeal, just simply click Here.
The Mighty Excalibur
If you ventured into Daguerro, you undoubtedly ran across a guy who is looking for the Magical Fingertip. He tells you in exchange for this item, he will give you a reward. Well, you might not know where that is located. (Unless of course you viewed the sections above.) It is located in the Auction House, and it is not cheap either. First off, you will need to buy the Rat Tail, Griffin's Heart, Une's Mirror, and Doga's Artifact. Now you need to take these, and sell them to the Nobles found around the Cafe. Doga's Artifact can be sold to the Weapon Shop owner. Once you do this, the Magical Fingertip will start to appear. You can only buy it one time, and one time only. Take it to the old man in Daguerro, and he will hand over Excalibur, Steiner's
3rd best weapon in the game.
Excalibur II
If you are feeling very lucky, you can try to get Excalibur II. This is simply the greatest weapon in the game. Better than
even Zidane's Ultima Weapon. There is a catch though. You need to defeat Lich in Memoria, on Disk 4, in under 12:00 hours.
Yea, you read right. Only 12 hours to get that far. It seems impossible, but it is not. Here is what you should do. First
leave all side quests, mini games, and any other extra thing out. Do not engage in the Chocobo Hot and Cold or Mognet. Just
focus on the story, and that is all. Second, fight half the battles you normally would. Use Zidane's Flee ability to get
out of fights faster. Skip the FMV's. This is done by ejecting the disk during the scene, and waiting for it to stop spinning.
then insert the disk again. With the PS2, you simply need only to eject, and close the tray. This should give you more than
ample time to get there. Once you defeat Lich, head over to the right pillar, and a "!" should appear. This is a very hard
challenge indeed. I would suggest having more than one save while doing this. (I personally had 13 on my emulator run) If
you feel you took too much time doing something, reload and try again. you will get there. I have faith in you.
Friendly enemies!?
Believe it or not, there are actually friendly enemies found in Final Fantasy IX. You will know you have come across one,
because the battle music is soft, and melodic. When you happen upon one, do not fight. Instead, give it a chance to talk.
It will ask for a type of stone. If you give it the stone it requests, you will get an item, and a good deal of AP. If done
in order, they will make a nod, as to whom your next encounter will be. You might think there is no reason behind these
guys showing up, but in fact there is. Once you have found each of these friendly guys, and have successfully given them what
they want, you will then be able to inflict physical damage on Ozma. This is a great benefit to that fight, as it is extremely
difficult even with physical attacks. There a way you can goof this up too. If you attack any of the creatures, they will
flee, and you will not get another chance to get them again. If you do not have enough stones they are asking for, you should
flee and return to them, when you have enough. You will have more than enough, after completing the Chocobo Hot and Cold game. Below
is a list of the friendly enemies, in the order you should encounter them. You can only get the blessing to physically attack
Ozma from the friendly Yan after you have given the right amounts of stones to the other friendly enemies first. May the stones
be with you...

Ragtime Mouse
While out wandering the forests of the world, you might come across an odd fellow, accompanied by a circle and a square. He is the Ragtime Mouse. This guy will not attack you, so do him the kindness in return. He will give you a "Pop Quiz" to see how knowledgeable you are on Final Fantasy IX. Each time you encounter him, he will ask you a question. The circle represents true, and the square represents false. You could also attack the Ragtimer, but why would you want to? Anyways, the first character to get a turn has to select the right answer within 20 seconds. If you get the answer right, you are given a certain amount of Gil. If you get it wrong, he will run away, and you will lose the question. Also if you fail to answer within 20 seconds, the question is considered wrong. Below are the questions you will be asked, and the correct answer to them.

Ordering the Knights of Pluto
In the beginning of the game, while looking
for Princess Garnet, Steiner will come across his company of knights. Each one of them will give a description of what their
interests and likes are. This might seem like typical NPC chatter, but you should pay close attention to them. This will have
effects later in the game. On Disk 3 while Bahamut is attacking Alexandria, Garnet will have to give orders to these same
troops. How well you paid attention to them earlier will determine if you can give the right orders. Below is the list of
knights, and the orders you should give to them.
TROOPS |
TASK |
Weimar & Haagen |
Protect the townspeople |
Breireicht & Laudo |
Contact Lindblum |
Blutzen & Kohel |
Gather information |
Mullenkedheim & Dojebon |
Fire the cannons |
If you give the right orders to each set of knights, Garnet will be given an Angel Earring accessory.
Renaming your characters
For the first time since Final fantasy VI, you have the ability to change your characters name in the middle of the game. First you will need to find
a Namingway Card. There are two ways to get this card. The first is in Kuja's room in the Desert Palace. It is located behind
the books in the foreground. The second is by winning it from Mario in the Treno card tournament. Once you have the card,
go to Daguerro. On the floor by the old man who asks for the magical Fingertip, there is a block by the arguing guys. press
it. Now find a man who is looking for the book Eidolon's and I. He is right by the old man. Now search the books on the far
right side of the room, and you will find this book. Return and tell the man, and he will move from his spot. Head into the
nook, and you will go to the mid level. On the right side, you will run into a man who asks about your card. He will then
learn the ways of the Namingway, and from then on he can rename any character in your party. Pretty cool huh?
Treasure hunting Rank
There is another big secret in Final Fantasy IX. It is the identity of the four-armed man, first seen in Alexandria. He is
a treasure hunter, and will rank you based on the amount of treasure you have collected. If you collect enough treasure to
get the rank of S, find your way to Daguerro. Here, he will finally tell you that he is none other than Gilgamesh of FF V/VIII
fame. He is hunting the ultimate treasure as well. (This would be Excalibur of course.) An odd note for excalibur II, is you
will get a message about Excalipoor from Ekindo. These are also both nods to Final Fantasy V. To obtain the rank of S,
you will need to find treasures everywhere. Here is a bit of a point guide for you to get there. You get 1 point for all
chests, "!" icons, event related items, and all Auction House rare items. (With the exception of the Magical Fingertip.) 2
points for all treasures found while riding Choco. Basically the Chocograph and Dead Pepper treasures. This does not count
in the digging of items during Hot and Cold. Sorry guys.
Final Fantasy III Music
If you would like a bit of Final Fantasy musical history, you are in the right spot. Go first to
the Auction House, and purchase both Doga's Artifact, and Une's Mirror. Now head for the Black mage Village. Here speak to
the Black mage standing by the Phonograph, and he will play a tune from Final Fantasy III (J). This tune will continue for
the remainder of your stay in the village. It should be noted that this music is not found in the DS version of Final Fantasy III. Several things in that port were changed, (In the DS release, Une has been respelled Unne) and this score has been altered. However the emulated version I have with re-translation has the proper score. |
Ruby's intervention
This is not so much a side quest, as it is a neat little easter egg. In the beginning of the game during your meeting about
Garnet, you are asked to choose between kidnapping Garnet, or Queen Brahne. If you choose the Queen 64 times, Ruby pops in
and speaks to Zidane. This is the only way to see this little scene. To see what Baku has to say about the queen, refer
to the Funny Shots section. |
Crime and Punishment ATE
This is one of the rarest ATE you will see. While in Treno as Dagger, you are intended to go to the Gargant with Dr. Tot.
Instead of going down the ladder to get to the Garagant, head back outside. Once you are there, you will get this ATE, showing Baku scolding Cinna for being lazy at South Gate. Pretty funny!
I do not remember where I got this screen from. I have had it from around the beginning of building the kingdom.
Until I can get my own screen, I would like to give proper credit. If you know who this image came from, or it is yours, please
e-mail me, and let me know. |
